About the Program
The Music Program at Sonora is dedicated to:
-
providing high quality instruction in order to promote a strong musical foundation for its students,

strengthening social and life skills of its members,

creating a sense of family among members,

building a lifelong love of learning and making music,

producing a safe and positive learning environment for each student,

developing strong leaders and productive members of society.
Course Offerings
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is a performance class for brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. This course meets the UC "F" entrance requirement. Students will perform at various concerts, games, rallies, assemblies, and festivals throughout Southern California from December through May.
Marching Band
Marching Band is a performance class for brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. This course awards 5 units towards the PE graduation requirement. Students will perform at competitions, football games, and assemblies from August through November.
Colorguard
The Colorguard at Sonora competes alongside the Band at football games and competitions during the marching season. After marching season is over, the Colorguard performs on their own on campus and at competitions throughout Southern California. Membership in this group is by audition only.
String Orchestra
The Orchestra at Sonora is for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass instruments. This course meets the UC "F" entrance requirement. Students will learn the basics of string playing and have the opportunity for various performances during the school year.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band meets after school from January through May and plays at several concerts and other events. Students will learn the basics of different Jazz styles and improvisation techniques.
Concert Choir
Concert Choir is a vocal music class in which students will learn technique, elements of music, and musical interpretation. Students perform at several festivals and concerts throughout the school year both on and off campus.
Piano
Piano provides an opportunity for the student to learn and develop basic playing and reading skills. These include music theory, scales, chord progressions, and a variety of pieces of music.
Guitar
Guitar provides an opportunity for the student to learn and develop basic playing and reading skills. These include music theory, chords, scales, and a variety of pieces of music.
Winter Drumline
The Sonora Winter Drumline is a performance ensemble that rehearses and competes throughout Southern California from December through May. They perform both on and off campus at competitions, assemblies, and various other events.
